Why a resource
centre?
A growing number of schools, early education and other
centres of learning are looking at how they can
successfully include children with special needs into
their classes. As a result, many teachers, parents and
others involved in this challenging venture are in need
of information and support. In response to this need,
Inclusive Education Western Cape has established a
resource centre which primarily serves the Western Cape
province.
How does it operate? Providing Information and Support
The Resource Centre is the 'hub' of the organisation,
serving as an advisory centre for parents, educators,
students and many others interested in inclusive
practices. It is a source of both physical and human
resources in its endeavours to provide information and
support to those who seek it.The resource centre provides the
following services:
- A phone-in and email
service to provide information and advice about
educational opportunities and support for
children with special needs; also to act as a
personal referral and networking service, eg
parent-to-parent, teacher-to teacher.
- A computerised
database with information on: relevant government
and non-government services; theory and practice
of inclusive education; teaching guidelines;
educational aids and assistive devices; schools
and centres; etc.
- A mini-library of
publications & videos for use at the centre
or on loan to members.
- Newsletters,
exhibitions and meetings around topics of
interest.
- Administrative
support to the management of the organisation and
to its training work.
- Individual
members of the organisation also support
learners, parents and teachers involved in
inclusive models in a wide variety of public and
independent schools, in a consultative role. The
Resource Centre endeavours, through its personal
referral and networking links, to share these
experiences and expertise.
- From
the Resource Centre, the organisation also
assists parents in negotiating acceptance of
their children in schools, and in mobolising
support structures. If necessary, the
organisation also lobbies the Western Cape
Education Department to put in place adequate and
appropriate support structures for inclusive
education.
