Can your application to School be denied? We tackle this question today as we have had several parents in the Western Cape region call in to say that schools have indicated upfront, that parents can not apply as they are not in the feeder zone, or that their registration process has started earlier. In searching for some answers we have found that correspondence via the WCED online portal, as an example, that in the Western Cape the department has NOT declared any feeder zones. With the pilot online process parents are given the opportunity to indicate which schools they would like to apply to in order of preference. Documents then have to be prepared and delivered to the schools of choice within 14 working days.
What is important to remember is the following:
* Applying to a school does not guarantee acceptance. The department has in all its communication indicated that parents must apply at more than one school.
* The proximity to a school does not guarantee placement. Living 50m or 50km from a school does not guarantee placement. Some schools factor proximity in their admissions policies, but it is rarely the sole criterion.
* Some schools receive five times the number of applications than the places they have available and can not satisfy the needs of everyone who apply
* School governing bodies and not the department are responsible for the admissions policies. A school, therefore, can determine certain criteria that are in line with the law, which could benefit some learner admissions over others - such as sibling preference.
Therefore ensure that you communicate with the school before hand in order to have an understanding as to what their application process is based on their policy. We wish all our applicants well, and welcome any input and feedback so that we have a safe platform for learning and engagement among parents and teachers. #school #admissions #application #southafrica #parents ...
